TikTok Offers Users Authority to Limit AI-Generated Media in Timelines

TikTok is introducing a new feature that enables them to lessen the volume of artificial intelligence-produced media appearing in their timelines. This initiative comes as the platform announced that it now features more than 1 thousand million AI-generated clips.

Pilot Phase and Launch

The new functionality is undergoing trials over the coming weeks before a widespread rollout. This development aligns with a increase in AI content, spurred by emerging content generation software.

AI Proliferation Online

Studies have shown that almost a tenth of the quickest rising video streams on a competing service only show AI-generated videos. A large amount of this material is classified as mass-produced AI material, a label for poor-quality, mass-produced content that is often illogical or dreamlike.

“We know from our community that numerous viewers enjoy content made with AI tools, including AI artwork to educational videos, and we intend to provide users the option to adjust the amount of that, depending on their own preferences,” said a platform representative.

Volume and Proportions

TikTok shared that there are now over a billion videos on its service labeled as artificially created. In total, in excess of 100 m pieces of content are uploaded to the app each day, making clips made by AI a limited percentage of its total content library.

User Control Features

Members will be able to decrease or raise the volume of AI-generated videos they watch by opening the “manage topic” option in the platform and selecting AI-made media. Further subjects that can already be adjusted under the setting cover politics, clothing, cosmetics, and movement.

Content Labeling and Policies

The platform’s policies require creators to tag “realistic” AI-generated content, and it prohibits harmful deepfakes of well-known individuals or crisis events. Any authentic-looking AI video that is without a tag can be removed under its user guidelines.

Furthermore, the platform will now add an AI-generated watermark to content produced via its built-in AI features, or detected by an cross-platform project for spotting artificial media. This step is aimed to stop users from trying to bypass the tagging system.

Responsible AI Funding

The platform is also launching a $2m awareness program for professionals and organizations to produce learning resources about using AI responsibly. This project will assist non-profit groups dedicated to training programming and robotics.

Content Safety Approach

The platform has defended its safety measures, following controversy over intentions to make redundant hundreds of content moderators in the UK. The company is set to reduce a significant number of roles in its user protection division in the UK capital, with labor groups and internet security professionals raising concerns that staff are being displaced by automated systems.

A company official clarified that human moderation would still have a role, but AI can safeguard staff by filtering out the most distressing content before it gets reviewed by people. The company stated a 76% decrease in shocking and graphic content reviewed by content reviewers over the previous year due to intervention by its machine learning processes.

We believe it is crucial to integrate staff and AI to ensure user safety,” the official commented. “We’ll have staff as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s very important to reduce exposure to unsafe media as swiftly, which is why a lot of the machine support is really helping us work at speed.”
