The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities found he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The one-time leader was found guilty of plotting a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending legal challenges.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the elderly politician was a preventative measure after recent developments were revealed.

This encompassed attempting to break his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the custody, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his getaway".

This, it said, would be made easier by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his offspring.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a senator, called for a assembly of his supporters near Bolsonaro's home to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your country, or observe everything from your phone there on your sofa? I urge you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so followers could "pray for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the magistrate's ruling was the possibility of his move to diplomatic missions near the home, considering that the probes revealed a background of organizing to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork highlights that the United States embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is positioned around 8 miles from the former president's residence.

International Reactions

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative United States President President Trump, prompting him to enact a half-rate duty on goods coming from Brazil.

The former president is being held in a federal law enforcement building in the capital and will experience a custody hearing on the following day.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the High Court to allow him to fulfill his full incarceration period under domestic detention, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be allowed to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he required regular treatment for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

He was convicted of leading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a plan which encompassed plans to kill the current president and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over Bolsonaro's trial.

The conspiracy was stopped because it failed to get the endorsement of the armed forces officials. Lula was took office without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a seven days after, on 8 January, many his followers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the federal district, Brasília.

The police intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The justices found that the protesters had been encouraged by the former president whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, bring back stability and reinstate his authority.

At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the completion of his term.

The former president called the trial a targeted investigation" and said it was intended to stop him running in the next presidential race.
