Pentagon Investigation Finds Defense Secretary Placed Troops in Jeopardy with Signal Chat.

A highly anticipated Department of Defense review has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth breached official protocols by sharing classified information in a Signal messaging chat, according to a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Incident

The chat group in dispute included details about a planned airstrike in Yemen against Houthi militants. This discussion was revealed after a journalist for the Atlantic was added as a member.

Other individuals in the group reportedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials do not work at the Pentagon.

Signal is a commercially offered messaging app that was not authorized for transmitting classified information.

Serious Risk to Forces

The internal investigation found that the intelligence shared by Hegseth was classified and could have endangered the lives of US service members if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

However, the document also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the information he shared, though it was unclear whether he formally exercised that authority.

Hegseth's Reaction

The informed individual said that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he provided a short written response.

In his response, Hegseth claimed he only disclosed details that would not have endangered personnel or compromised the mission. He added that he had the right to downgrade information and viewed the investigation to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The finalized investigation has been shared with Congress. An publicly releasable copy is anticipated to be released in the coming days.
